Healthy Families is a free and voluntary program in Oneida County that helps families meet the challenges of parenting.  The program's home based services start during pregnancy or at birth and, depending on the family’s needs, may continue for up to five years.

New or expecting parents may ask their doctor, nurse, WIC counselor or other workers for a referral to Healthy Families.  Or a parent may call us directly to talk with our staff about the program.

To start, a Family Assessment Worker meets with the parent(s) and reviews the family’s history, needs, goals and thoughts about parenting, and assists by linking families to resources in the community.

Healthy Families may then offer the services of a Family Support Worker to those families who would benefit from ongoing participation.  Upon enrollment, the family’s own Family Support Worker begins making regular home visits.

What does a Family Support Worker do?

Supports and reinforces the positive interactions and bonding between parents and child.

  • Provides parenting education to enhance the parent-child relationship and the home environment.
  • Initiates and maintains regular, long-term relationships with the families.
  • Provides family-centered and strength-based support.
  • Helps families identify needs and strengths to plan  individual goals.
  • Assists in building the family support system.
  • Makes referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Assists in building the problem solving ability of families.
  • Offers information on the growth and development stages  of infants and children.
  • Explains techniques that may promote child development.
  • Assists with screening to identify possible delays.
  • Promotes methods of stress reduction and appropriate discipline measures.
  • Answers questions about health and childcare … such as how to calm a fussy baby, when the baby should see a doctor, what to know about breastfeeding … and more.

Healthy Families-Oneida County is funded by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, provided since 2001 through a partnership of the Family Nurturing Center of CNY and the Oneida County Health Department.
